JAMB Clears Speculation On 2017 UTME, CBT To Hold In May

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday put to rest speculation on when it will conduct the 2017 University and Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

The board disclosed that the examination would now hold in May 2017. Speaking in an interview with The Guardian in his office, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede gave reasons for the shift in date from March when the Computer-Based Test (CBT) usually hold to May.
According to him: “Normally, we conduct our UTME examinations around March, but the result would be ready in about two or three days and we keep this. But when do we need the result, it is about July or August and that is why there is room for suspicion. If you go on the net, you will see people claiming that they can help people upgrade their results. The reason for this is that the results are left to lie fallow from March to July.”

Oloyede further disclosed that the board is communicating with other examination bodies such as the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) to ensure they do not make their examinations mutually exclusive.

He said after mutual consultation with these bodies, it was agreed that JAMB examinations would hold without clashing with dates for the other tests.

Meanwhile, the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB) has released the results of the November/December 2016 National Business Certificate and National Technical Certificate (NBC/NTC) and the Advanced National Business Certificate and Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANBC/ANTC).

The Registrar/Chief Executive Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, who made the announcement in Benin City, Edo State, called on state governments to establish more technical in local council areas to train young persons in technical and vocational studies.
According to her, 21,476 of the 48,842 candidates that sat for the examinations scored five credits and above in English Language and Mathematics, representing about 47 per cent success rate.

JAMB Scraps Scratchcard and 6 Other Things You Need To Know About 2017 UTME

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which usually holds in March will be holding in May this year.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), said the examinations will be coming up later than usual as part of steps to check malpractices.
Here’s what you need to know about the much-awaited 2017 UTME.
1. The forms for this year’s UTME will be on sale within two weeks.
2. The examinations will be conducted in May and will not clash with any SSCE examinations.

3. The new date was agreed upon by all examination bodies after going through their timetables.
4. The new timing of the UTME was to check any form of malpractice, especially upgrading of results.

 5. JAMB has scrapped the use of scratch cards because UTME candidates were being extorted.

6. The agency has handed over 10 officials to the police for investigation in connection with fraud associated with sales of scratch cards.

7. 1.7million are expected to sit for UTME this year (about 1.5million candidates for UTME and about 200,000 and 300,000 candidates for Direct Entry).

JAMB Registrar Speaks More About 2017 UTME Exam-To Commence Sales Of Form Within The Next Two Weeks

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede, on Wednesday, said that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will take place in May.

Oloyode who spoke about the use of scratch cards, noted that the cases of candidates being defrauded are rampant, ”For the 2017 UTME, we have taken a decision to commence the sale of the form soon. Within the next two weeks, we will be out. The reason for this is that we are making all arrangements that ought to be made.
”We have changed the process of payment, no more scratch card selling. We need to put the right architecture in place and we have put this in place.
“The examination will be coming up later than usual. This is to make sure we take into consideration the interest of the students. We are going to conduct the UTME in May. It will not clash with any SSCE examinations, Oloyede stressed.

He also added that “Normally, we conduct our examinations around March and the results will be ready within two to three days. But when do we need the results? It is always between July and August.
”This gives room for all forms of suspicion. If you go on the net, you will see people claiming that they could help candidates to upgrade their results because the results are lying fallow between March and July.
“Now we want to shorten the period in such a way that the time between the examination and when the results will be used will be very short. There will be no opportunity for anybody to even dream of upgrading results.

Speaking about the examinations, “I or the management will not promise a hitch-free examination because when you are doing the type of re-engineering we are doing, you cannot say that there will be no hitches.
”But we believe that we are on top of it and whatever problem arises, we will solve it. Everybody will, however, have fair treatment and everybody will be well-treated. This is what I can assure Nigerians. We expect about 1.5 million candidates for UTME and about 200,000 and 300,000 candidates for Direct Entry,” he added.

JAMB Release New Guidelines To CBT Operators

JAMB Release New Guidelines To CBT Operators

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a fresh standardization rules to licensed operators of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres ahead of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) examination.

In the new rule contained in a document obtained by The Nation on Wednesday in Abuja, CBT Centre operators are required to upgrade their facilities to accommodate minimum of 250 candidates.
This is against previous practice where CBT centres operated under different capacities, with tendency for manual distribution of candidates, prejudice and sharp practices by operators, local thugs and disloyal interns.

According to the document, JAMB and proprietors of CBT centres agreed on the issues of standardization of all CBT centres, in terms of capacity, equipment, materials, competent human resources and security appliances including Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems.

JAMB, in the document, warned that failure to comply with the new set of rules would result in automatic disqualification of the operator and outright withdrawal of its license.
In this regard, the board has begun an upgrade of all its 11 CBT centres across Nigeria from their previous capacity to 250 as stipulated by the new rules.
Also, the four new CBT centers built by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) have been upgraded to minimum standard.

JAMB spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the recent decision by the management to install CCTV cameras in all CBT centres was to curtail examination malpractices by closely monitoring examination activities in all the centres.
“In order to eliminate unnecessary waste and stress involved in travelling to Bwari, the Board’s headquarters in Abuja, for one issue or the other, the Board has successfully automated the following services: late registration, change of course/institution, printing of admission letter, printing of result slip and correction of data,” Dr. Benjamin said.

I Wrote JAMB 12 Times Before OAU

I Wrote JAMB 12 Times Before OAU Eventually Gave Me Admission-Student Recalls His Ordeal

A student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Kazeem Olajide Bashir has revealed how his repetitive and determined process of sitting for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for a dozen time eventually yielded positive effort.

Bashir, in an interview disclosed that he started sitting for UTME, picking OAU as his first choice since 2004 and he usually score far above 200 but never secured the admission. He explained that his humble background and flair for social justice spurred him to stay focused on trying again and again and that the institution was his dream school since his secondary school days.
This dream was almost dashed after he tried gaining admission into the institution for over 8 times without success. After the 2012 UTME, he became discouraged but people around him encouraged him not to give up on his dreams.

“Sincerely, my case is pathetic, I went through a chronic psychological trauma in my quest for gown and wig at OAU. I almost lost my mind, but for constant encouragement from many of my friends and relatives. The moral supports from my immediate family, especially my father gave me the requisite impetus to move on till I attained success.
”I have been scoring over 200 in the UTME since 2004, with good grades in the Post-UTME too, although there is no time I ever meet up with the cut-off marks, but there are other candidates who were admitted even with scores lower than mine. For instance, I had 245 in 2015 UTME, and got over 50 per cent in the Post-UTME, but unfortunately, I could not make the supplementary list.

“Despite the trauma, I remained focused and determined. I had the conviction that if I don’t quit, I will win one day,” Bashir said with pride that he eventually won.

JAMB to hold UTME in May

JAMB to hold UTME in May

JAMB to hold UTME in May
Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says the 2017/2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will hold in May.

Oloyede, who was speaking at the 2017 Nigerian Academy of Letters Annual Lecture on Thursday in Abuja, said there was delay in the sales of the forms due to some logistics.
He said that the board had eliminated the use of scratch cards owing to the fact that many students were victims of extortion from cybercafe attendants.

Oloyede said that the board was putting in place strategies that would ensure hitch-free conduct of the examinations.

He added that the board had consulted with relevant examination bodies to ensure there was no clash in any examination.

“We have observed that people are selling fake forms but what we are doing is to try to sanitise the system and as soon as the sanitisation is done we will start selling the forms.

“In any case, JAMB has invited other examination bodies, there will be no clash but we want to hold the exams when it is appropriate.

“You also know that if we conduct the examination in March, the result will come out almost immediately but the result cannot be used until August or September.

“So, we have to keep the results and that will give room for people to be thinking it’s possible to upgrade.

“But, if we conduct our examination very close to when the result is needed the possibility or perceptions for upgrading will not be there.

“We need to reassure stakeholders that those selling fake forms are gone. We are not going to sell out forms through the other process.

“We will start the sale of the form and by May the examination will be conducted,’’ Oloyede explained.

He said that JAMB would use existing banks for the sales of this year’s UTME to prevent students from being extorted.

“There is no offline registration, people extort students by collecting money from them but the worst is the mismatch of picture, data and biometrics,’’ Oloyede said.

He said that some Nigerians involved in some of the shady deals had been arrested and some were being prosecuted.

Oloyede called on Nigerians to be patient as the forms would soon be out for candidates to purchase. (NAN)

5 sentenced over sale of fake JAMB forms

Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede said five persons have been sentenced to various prison terms for selling fake JAMB forms to unsuspecting candidates.

Oloyede disclosed this yesterday in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists during the 2017 Nigerian Academy of Letters’ lecture organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He said forms for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which is now scheduled for May 2017 are not yet on sale, adding that the Board has embarked on  massive prosecution of individuals and syndicates engage in the selling of the fake forms.

The Board, according to him, has no plan to hike the price of JAMB forms, stressing that he will be the last person to increase the burden of parents.

JAMB: Statistics on varsity admission untrue, says JAMB boss

JAMB: Statistics on varsity admission untrue, says JAMB boss

Stories from Fred Ezeh, Abuja
Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has described the notion that the capacity of Nigerian universities was far below the number of candidates that qualify for admission in a particular academic year as untrue.

The JAMB helmsman thus challenged the agencies that regularly churn out such figures to justify them or quit misinforming Nigerians and inciting them against the board.

Oloyede, on the sidelines of the 2016 Higher Education Summit in Abuja on Monday, said: “The fact that 1.5 million candidates sat for JAMB exams in a particular year does not translate to same figure qualifying for admission. It is only those with the requisite 180 cut-off marks, as stipulated by the admission guidelines, that would be considered. Even among the candidates that scored 180, a significant number of them might not have five credits required for varsity admission,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, has mandated JAMB to, henceforth, publish the full list of unutilised admission slots into all tertiary institutions on a course-by-course basis at the end of the first leg of the admission process, to enable candidates and parents take full advantage of existing admission vacancies in institutions where they exist.

The minister stressed that the transparency would prevent a situation where some institutions have more than the number of students they need, while others struggle to fill their quota. He, however, advised parents not to keep their wards at home for having not secured admission into a particular institution or course of their choice, but to have them in school while they await admission into their school and courses of choice.

Over nine million students across Nigeria who sat for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations in the last six years could not gain admission into tertiary institutions in the country.
This was contained in a report released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the number of students that gained JAMB admissions between 2010 and 2016.
The report, collated from JAMB data, reflected that a total of 11, 703,709 applications were received within the six-year period while a total of 2,674,485 students were admitted across the 36 states and the FCT.
Analysis showed that in 2010, a total of 1,513,940 applications were received while 423,531 students were admitted, representing 28 per cent of students who applied for admission. Adamawa and Niger States both admitted 38 per cent of students who applied for admission in 2010 as both States received 14,483 and 16,556 applications while 5,678 and 6,278 students were admitted respectively.
A total of 1,636,356 applications were received while 417,341 students were admitted in 2011, being 26 per cent of students who applied for admission nationwide.
Yobe State with 7,879 applications and 3,185 admissions had 40 per cent of students who applied for admission admitted.
Further analysis showed that 1,632,835 applications were received in 2012 while 447,176 admissions were granted in 2012 representing 27 per cent of applications to admissions during the year.
Yobe State with 9,064 applications and 4,138 admissions has the highest percentage of applications to admissions with 46 recorded.
The lowest percentages of applications to admissions were recorded in 2013 and 2014 with 24 per cent and 25 per cent of applications to admissions recorded respectively during the period under review.
The highest percentage of applications to admissions was recorded in 2015 with 30 per cent of applications to admissions recorded. Yobe State with 17,461 applications and 9,703 admissions has the highest percentage of applications to admissions in the year with 56 per cent recorded.
